Spirit’s monthly roundup of what’s new in books, television, movies, and the Web.

MOVIE

Quantum of Solace
On Nov. 14, Daniel Craig will follow up on the successful Casino Royale with a new James Bond flick. Though still bristling over the death of love interest Vesper Lynd, Bond soon finds a new leading lady, Camille (Olga Kurylenko, below). He also squares off against a terrorist trying to take control of Bolivia’s water supply. That plan will surely dry up once the unhinged double-O arrives—in style, of course.

PAPERBACK

Night Work
FROM THE PUBLISHER: “Jonas wakes up one morning to discover that he is the last living being on Earth. Nothing moves outside. No cars. No people. No animals.”
THE PLOT: Part apocalyptic fiction, part psychological thriller, Night Work follows Jonas as he attempts to figure out why everyone has suddenly disappeared. As he wanders around his native Austria, Jonas leaves messages on walls and installs video cameras to see if there are any other survivors. He gets his answer when he finds a photo of himself sleeping and discovers a knife stuck in his wall. As he tracks down this unknown other, Jonas learns that things—and people—aren’t always what they seem.
HIT: Thomas Glavinic’s novel won high praise when it debuted across the pond earlier this year.

DVD

Shrek the Halls
Can our favorite grumpy green ogre handle holiday shopping and decorating the tree? In Shrek the Halls, the new papa of three ogre-lings gets tasked with making his kiddos’ first Christmas perfect. With the help of Donkey and Puss in Boots, he plans an unforgettable party. Originally a TV movie that aired last winter, Shrek the Halls hits shelves Nov. 4. As with the big-screen installments, the DVD features the voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas.

PODCAST

Geek Brief
THE CONCEPT: A gadget-loving woman reviews the latest and greatest tech.
EARLY RISERS: Millions of people tune in every week to hear spunky young host Cali Lewis (real name: Luria Petrucci) report on cool, high-tech toys and other new developments.
THIS JUST IN: A recent podcast episode covered a system in development at Georgia Tech that would allow paralyzed people to steer their wheelchairs with their tongues.

HARDBACK

Outliers
IN A NUTSHELL: Blink author Malcolm Gladwell turns his focus to society’s high-achievers.
RAGS TO RICHES: Gladwell’s goal, he writes, is “to convince you that the way we think about success is all wrong.” So he examines society’s alpha dogs, from athletes to entrepreneurs, looking not at what they’ve done, but where they came from. His investigation helped him uncover why so many Asians ace math and why the Beatles ruled rock.

TELEVISION

Monarchy, the Royal Family at Work
Live like a queen—or at least see how a queen lives—during a six-part PBS series that takes you behind the scenes of the British royal family. Granted access by Queen Elizabeth II, a camera crew captures the monarchy at work and, though the title of show doesn’t say so, at play. Exclusive inside glimpses include state visits, foreign travel, as well as interviews with the royal family, the crown jeweler, and the yeoman guard. Airs Wednesdays starting Nov. 12.
