GOLF CARTS

Golf Carts injure about 9,000 people every year.

Not just on the green, either. Golf carts have cropped up everywhere from airports to businesses. They’ve also become speedier, reaching up to 25 miles per hour. Maybe that’s why cart-related injuries have spiked more than 132 percent since 1990, according to a study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. Researchers analyzed data from U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2006 and pointed to a lack of seat belts and all-wheel brakes as possible causes. Factor in the lax regulations on golf cart operation, and you’ll want to hold on tight the next time you go for a joyride.

Speaking of a need for seat belts, Sarasota-based Cruise Car recently debuted a line of street-legal, solar-powered carts that can reach up to 65 miles per hour.

If you demand a cart with more attitude, check out the models manufactured by LA Concept Cars. They certainly look like they can handle a weekend on the back nine and in the backcountry.

Before you get behind the wheel, follow Discover Golf’s advice (sample: “Avoid driving over sprinkler heads”) to ensure you’re not the next cart driver admitted to the emergency room.
